Class Descriptions

ADULT CO-ED MIXED MARTIAL ARTS

Ages 13 and up. Students will be taught a variety of martial art techniques based on the disciplines of wrestling, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Thai boxing and kick boxing with a focus on self-defense. Classes will include a light workout, no martial arts equipment or uniforms needed.

KIDS MIXED MARTIAL ARTS

 

Combining a mixture of techniques from various styles of martial arts with a focus on building situational awareness and self confidence, as well as self defense. Students will learn skills from wrestling, Brazilian jiu-jitsu, Thai boxing and kick boxing. Co-Ed class, age ranges from 2nd - 6th grade. No martial arts clothing or equipment is needed.

ACRO

 

Acro is a 30-45-minute class for students 3 to 18 years old, beginning with Acro Stars and on into Acro 1,2 and 3. This is an acrobatic style class that teaches floor gymnastics. Acro is a class that progresses from forward rolls and cartwheels to advanced tumbling, including aerial and back handspring work. Teachers work with each student on their individual level. This class also focuses on flexibility, agility, and teamwork. Our instructors are certified in Module 1 Acrobatic Arts along with back handsprings and aerials. Acro classes will be in the recital. The levels are separated by individual advancement, not age.

Attire- leotard, bare feet. Hair must be securely back away from face.

BALLET 1-5

 

In these levels, a structured ballet barre is given along with appropriate stretching exercises to promote technique, strength, and flexibility. Center work focuses on coordination, musicality, and performance quality. Ballet is the foundation of all dance and is its most important technique class.

Attire- blue leotard, pink tights, ballet skirt, ballet shoes. Hair must be securely back away from face.

BALLET STARS

 

This is a 30 min class that introduces ballet to your young dancers.  Basic ballet terminology will be taught focusing on motor skills, listening skills, musicality and body awareness.  Fun creative movement exercises will keep your dancer loving the class and wanting to learn more about ballet.

Attire- pink tights, pink leotard, ballet shoes

BATON

 

This is a 30 min class for students age 5-10. Baton twirling is a sport involving the manipulation of a metal rod and the performers body to a coordinated routine. Baton enhances hand-eye coordination. Each student will be sized for the correct baton for their body.

Attire- leotard, tights, dance shorts, leggings, jazz shoes.

CREATIVE MOVEMENT

 

This is a 30 minute class for students 2-3 years old. This wonderful class is designed for children who want to dance but are not quite old enough to join a ballet class. The instructor uses games, stories, and songs to teach balance, rhythm, movement, coordination, and basic ballet steps.

Attire- pink leotards, tights and ballet shoes. A ballet skirt may be worn. Hair must be securely back away from face.

CONTEMPORARY

 

Contemporary dance is a style of expressive dance that combines elements of several dance genres including modern, jazz, lyrical and classical ballet. Contemporary dancers strive to connect the mind and the body through fluid dance movements. Contemporary dance stresses versatility and improvisation, unlike the strict, structured nature of ballet. Contemporary dancers focus on floor work, using gravity to pull them down to the floor. This dance genre is often done in bare feet. Contemporary dance can be performed to many different styles of music.

Attire- Leotard, tights, dance shorts, leggings. Hair must be securely back away from face.

HIP HOP

 

Hip Hop is a 30-minute or 45-minute class offered to students 7 to 18 years old. Hip Hop is an upbeat style of dance performed to popular music. Although Hip Hop’s roots came from urban street dancing, it has become increasingly popular in the entertainment world. There are many styles of Hip Hop and your child will explore and learn these styles.

Attire- leotard, tank tops, shorts, leggings, sweats, tennis shoes or hip hop shoes. Hair must be securely back away from face.

JAZZ

 

Jazz dance is fast and fun. It uses upbeat music and leaps and turns to interpret traditional and not-so-traditional movements. It varies in style depending on music and other elements but has a strong technical background based on ballet terminology.

Attire- Leotard, tights, dance shorts, leggings. Hair must be securely back away from face.

 

 

LYRICAL

 

Lyrical is a fusion of ballet, jazz, and modern, with expressive motions that tell a story. These classes blend the sustained, controlled movement of ballet with the freedom, power, and dynamics of jazz and modern. Students will learn lyrical technique along with freedom of expression and interpretation of music.

Attire- any leotard, tights, dance shorts, leggings, lyrical shoes. Hair must be securely back away from face.

 

 

MODERN

 

A form of dance that emerged in the early 20th century out of defiance of Ballet. Centered around pedestrian movements and concepts of fall & recover, contract & release and push & pull, Modern Dance reflects & challenges Art, Philosophy, and Current Issues. Modern is the polar opposite of ballet. While ballet focuses on symmetry, poise and lift form the core; modern works on asymmetry, a connection to the ground and body contractions. There are many Modern techniques and your child will explore many including Graham and Horton.

Attire- any leotard, dance shorts, leggings or tights. Dancer may wear bare feet or half dance shoe. Hair must be securely back away from face.

 

 

MOMMY AND ME

 

This is a 45 minute class designed to develop coordination skills, listening skills, balance, music interpretation, creative movement and motor development in the youngest dancers, ages 18 months -3. This program is an excellent introduction to the world of dance and lots of fun for Mom and dancer as Mom will also participate in class with the dancer!  This is also a great class to encourage a strong relationship between Mother and child.

Attire- Comfortable Clothes for movement. 

 

MUSICAL THEATER

 

Musical Theater is a 45-minute class for students 8 to 18 years old, which incorporates a combination of Jazz and acting. With this style of dance, you are working through Jazz technique while portraying a character. Using songs from Broadway, we focus on bringing out our inner actor/actress!

Attire- leotard, tights, dance shorts, leggings, jazz shoes. Hair must be securely back away from face.

 

 

POINTE

 

Pointe technique is the part of classical ballet technique that concerns pointe work, in which a ballet dancer supports all body weight on the tips of fully extended feet. It is said the a dancer is to be en pointe when the dancer's body is supported in this manner, and a fully extended vertical foot is said to be en pointe when touching the floor, even when not bearing weight. This class is invitation only. A dancer may request entry to ballet teacher and said teacher will evaluate.

Attire- black leotard, pink tights, pointe shoes. Hair must be securely back away from face.

 

 

PRE BALLET

 

This is a 45 minute class for students 5-6 years old. Basic ballet skills, terminology, rhythm, and coordination are taught, practiced, and developed through creative movement, music, and mime in a supportive and supervised environment.

Attire- blue leotard, pink tights, ballet shoes. Ballet skirts may be worn. Hair must be securely back away from face.

 

 

TAP

 

Tap is a 30-minute or a 45-minute class that is offered for students 5 to 18 years old. This is a percussive style of dancing. Its name comes from the tapping sound made when the metal plates on the dancer’s shoes touches a hard surface. Tap is a great way to encourage rhythm and musicality.

Attire- any color leotard, tights, dance shorts, leggings and tap shoes. Hair must be securely back away from face.
